Ecology Center
Objective
The Ecology Center’s mission is to inspire and build a sustainable, healthy, and just future for the East Bay, California, and beyond. We transform the ideals of sustainability into everyday practice. We deliver information you can act on, infrastructure you can count on, and leadership for lasting change.
The EC addresses critical issues through a model of education, demonstration, replication, and advocacy. Barretto partnered with key leadership to develop a community impact report, acknowledging the organization’s successes and achievements in 2024.

The Solution
The Ecology Center envisions a world where human activity nurtures the ecosystems that we all depend on—a world of sustainable cities; empowered, resilient communities; zero waste and zero toxics; equal access to healthy food; sustainable resource use; and a safe and stable climate.
Our aim was to capture the Ecology Center’s rich legacy in both print and digital formats—an ambitious shift for a cost-conscious nonprofit—while bringing their story into the present day. We were guided throughout by core themes: the connection between people and nature; harmony; joy and optimism; a passionate commitment to sustainability; and grassroots empowerment capable of sparking change at a national scale.

The Ecology Center has operated Berkeley’s Curbside Recycling Program since 1973, when it was launched as a demonstration project collecting newspapers. Recycling remains a principal focus of the Center, now with a weekly pick-up of recyclables under a City of Berkeley contract. This curbside program has become a model for thousands of municipal recycling programs.
